A few unconsidered realities of time travel

My all-time favorite movie is Somewhere in Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. It’s a time-travel love story, filmed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, and released on 3 October 1980. Now, every year a group of fans gets together for a SIT weekend, hosted by the hotel. They dress in period costumes (1912), rewatch the movie, listen to local yokels and stagehands reminisce about the experience of filming, stand at the top of those stairs and pose for pictures next to that tree.

I saw the movie the week it came out. Ex Number One wasn’t a creative dater, and the only thing we ever did together was watch movies. I wouldn’t label his actions toward me as emotional abuse for another ten years, but hindsight tells me that weekend’s date night was one of my first major experiences of it.

As we sat there munching our popcorn, Ex Number One didn’t actually watch the movie. Instead, he watched my reaction to it. The idea of time travel has always intrigued me, and really gets my imagination going. In short, I simply loved that movie! And I became an instant fan of Christopher Reeve. I wanted to talk to my husband about it. You know, have one of those deep meaningful conversations with someone who claimed to be my soulmate. But he blew off my ramblings with a…
